The Collaborative Leaders Network
is committed to solving critical issues in the state of Hawaii through collaboration and open dialogue. Recent efforts focused on the development of the State’s early childhood program, mediation for a decade-old water rights dispute on Maui, and support for the Freshwater Initiative, a project of the Hawaii Community Foundation that seeks to find ways to increase Hawaii’s water supplies. The organization is also dedicated to cultivating a community of trained facilitators in the islands.
As the cornerstone initiative of the Hawaii Leadership Forum, The Omidyar Fellows program, helps strengthen the future of Hawaii by equipping diverse groups of emerging leaders with the skills and relationships needed to collectively transform the state. Fellows begin with an intensive 15-month curriculum designed to build stronger leaders and cross-sector connections and continue their lifelong commitment to affect societal change through the Forum of Fellows.
The Omidyar Fellowship at Santa Fe Institute aims to create “new leadership for new science.” This fellowship offers early-career scholars a residence of up to three years in a collaborative research community that provides cross-disciplinary opportunities to study complex problems that advance scientific frontiers.
Wise decisions emerge from effective governance that is just, responsive, and sensitive to our interdependencies. We believe a strong democracy respects individual liberty and privacy, values citizen engagement, and requires government transparency and accountability.
The Democracy Fund’s Governance program is focused on principled leadership and an effective Congress. By fostering better, more trusting relationships among political leaders, encouraging greater civility, and increasing their capacity to work together to solve problems, the Governance program aims to help our elected leaders deliberate, negotiate, and serve the American people.
Additionally, the Democracy Fund’s Elections program is focused on modern elections and the role of money in politics. By funding unbiased research, highlighting ways to improve elections administration, and encouraging bipartisan solutions as well as breakthrough ideas, the Elections program aims to ensure that the views and votes of the public come first in our democracy.
By supporting courageous, innovative organisations and entrepreneurs around the world, Luminate fights for greater public participation, institutional transparency and accountability, individuals’ digital and data rights, and press freedom and independence.
Pierre Omidyar serves as a member of the Nicolas Berggruen Institute’s 21st Century committee, a forum for dialogue on global governance.
Through both for-profit investments and nonprofit grants, Omidyar Network’s Governance & Citizen Engagement initiative invests in organizations that support greater empowerment for citizens and more effective, efficient, and fair government and allocation of resources.
Public First Law Center works to develop solutions that promote open, transparent, and responsive government in Hawaii. The Center has led a number of efforts in support of its mission including advocating for open meetings and greater public records access and lobbying the Hawaii State Legislature.

The Democracy Fund’s Public Square program invests in innovations and institutions that are reinventing local media and expanding the “public square” to ensure that people can access diverse sources of information and different points of view. The Public Square program supports efforts to combat misinformation deepen individuals’ engagement in civic life though new venues for reasoned debate and deliberation.
First Look consists of Topic Studios, the award-winning entertainment studio that develops, produces, and finances feature films, documentaries, television, and podcasts, and the Topic streaming service, offering crime, thrillers, and mysteries from around the world. First Look’s non-profit arm, First Look Institute, recently spun-off the investigative news outlet The Intercept, and documentary film unit Field of Vision, into their own independent organizations. In addition, it transitioned its Press Freedom Defense Fund into a new press freedom initiative at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism, and its Lawyers for Reporters program into a new initiative at the Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice.
Honolulu Civil Beat is an award-winning investigative and watchdog online media enterprise aimed at informing and engaging community members through public affairs and investigative reporting on topics of critical importance to Hawaii.
Humanity United engages and supports media partners, reporters and storytellers to raise awareness and educate key audiences about important social issues. Humanity United supports The Guardian’s media platform titled “Modern Day Slavery in Focus,” a series investigating human trafficking and exploitation around the world.
Luminate supports organizations that are committed to defending a vibrant, free press that uncovers the truth and holds power to account. It also works to enable people to shape the decisions that affect their lives and access the services they need, with a focus on those groups that are marginalised or underserved.
An advocate for quality journalism, Pierre Omidyar serves on the editorial board of the World Post, a platform for understanding current events through a global lens.
Hopelab is a social innovation lab focused on designing science-based technologies to improve the health and well-being of teens and young adults. Projects include a collaboration with Nurse-Family Partnership, where we are working to help scale the program by better meeting the needs of today’s “digital native” teen mothers; improving the treatment and survivorship outcomes for adolescents and young adults with cancer; and improving the availability of tech-enabled mental and behavioral health interventions for adolescents.
With a belief that human freedom is paramount to an individual’s ability to thrive, Humanity United works to abolish practices of modern day slavery across the globe by engaging partners from nonprofits, media, government, and business to be part of the solution. Recognizing that the private sector can be a force for good, Humanity United collaborated with industry thought leaders to launch KnowTheChain, a resource that people business and investors understand and address forced labor abuses within their supply chain.

Unfortunately, fundamental peace and security are increasingly at risk and international order is being challenged in ways we haven’t seen before. Pierre and Pam Omidyar partnered with their alma matter, Tufts University, to create a $100 million Omidyar-Tufts Microfinance Fund. The fund bolsters international microfinance institutions in their efforts to scale capacity to make loans to poor to launch their own entrepreneurial pursuits.
Ulupono Initiative aims to improve the quality of life for island residents in part by increasing the use of clean, renewable energy and the production of locally grown food. Ulupono’s energy investments each contribute to decreasing Hawaii’s dependency on imported fossil fuels, including Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning, which is developing one of Hawaii’s largest energy efficiency projects with a district cooling system in downtown Honolulu, and Bikeshare Hawaii, which recently introduced Biki, Honolulu’s new bikeshare program. In the food sector, Ulupono has funded local, pasture-raised beef projects, such as Paniolo Cattle Company, and the Hawaii Farm-to-School Initiative, which aims to include more local food on public school menus.
